Phase 1 & 2 Standards Manuals

These booklets must be purchased as a set. They describe and define the actions, movements and figures which people will learn as they are introduced to Round Dancing. They are intended for use with the Glossary Booklet. The material in these booklets is divided into sections according to the rhythm and dance type. Entries appear alphabetically within each appropriate section. Rhythm characteristics are defined at the beginning of each rhythm. The format for each figure within that rhythm consists of the title and abbreviation (if applicable), and the preferred cue term. Timing, basic steps for the man, and basic steps for the woman (in parentheses) follow. Descriptions of the figures are given for the MAN and WOMAN and explanatory notes (if needed). The following rhythms are included in these phases: Two Step, TS; Waltz, WZ.

Abbreviations

This booklet lists most common abbreviations used in writing round dance cue sheets. The purpose of abbreviations is to reduce the size of words, without confusing the reader, and to conserve space within the body of the cue sheet. It also includes guidelines that apply to the usage of abbreviations and punctuation.

Glossary

The Glossary is a separate section of the ROUNDALAB Standards that lists terms used in Round Dancing that are not figures and may not have the same meaning as the common dictionary definition. These terms may be in current usage or may be terms formerly used in Round Dancing in which case the current term will be shown.

Cueing Guidelines

This booklet suggests cueing techniques that will be the least confusing for the dancers. It covers step cues, single measure cues, jive and west coast swing cues, two measure cues, four measure cues, defined figures that require a numerical suffix, general and optional cues.

Cue Sheet Writing Guidelines

This booklet lists record companies and record suppliers. It describes in minute detail the procedures for writing a standardized cue sheet. It includes a sample cue sheet with explanations of what each section should include. It also has sample cue sheet segments for most rhythms.

Manual for New Round Dance Leaders

This manual will give the new instructor ideas to help them be successful. It lists the elements of round dancing, helps break down a cue sheet and describes some of the technique in cueing. It lists things you should know about your sound equipment, teaching techniques and has an example teaching sequence. It has a lesson plan for two step and waltz as well as cueing modules to help the beginning instructor.
